Social Media News - 7.19.20
The biggest story this week was the high-profile attack by hackers on Twitter. 130 verified users were targeted in the Bitcoin scam, including Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Apple, and more. Despite only 130 accounts being targeted, Twitter disabled tweet publishing on most verified accounts for a brief period, as they tried to get a handle on the situation.
The second biggest story is the impending global launch of “Reels”…Reels is essentially a TikTok clone built into Instagram. Despite being currently available in a few counties (Brazil and India), it won’t be coming to the US until August. Will we see another influx of “freebooting” of TikTok videos being posted to Reels?
Despite the “ad-pocalypse” easing off in the second week of July, Disney is now joining the boycott and has reportedly paused all ad spending on Facebook. For new features, Facebook Messenger has now added a feature that lets you share your screen on mobile devices.
TikTok has remained mostly out of the news cycle this week, though reports have surfaced of the Trump campaign running several anti-TikTok ads on Facebook accusing the Chinese app of 'spying on you’…
On the LinkedIn front, users reported bugs with business pages across the platform, though LinkedIn has not released a statement. However, they are currently being sued over allegation it secretly reads Apple users' clipboard content.
Lastly, Snapchat made the news this week as they’ve added brand profiles to give advertisers a presence that won't just disappear in a day. Snap is also trying to get ahead of TikTok as they’ve begun testing TikTok-style navigation for exploring public content.
