It’s been a tumultuous week for TikTok…Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the app could be banned in the US, following in footsteps of India. Reports also broke that Amazon was requesting employees delete the app from their phones, citing security risks…although Amazon later walked back the policy, claiming it was an ‘error’….The second half the week wasn’t better, as TikTok experienced glitches, causing widespread panic amongst users.
Earlier in the week, Facebook shut down pages and accounts tied to GOP operative Roger Stone for posting misinformation, who was pardoned by President Trump on Friday. Facebook continues to grapple with the idea of banning political ads from the platform. Facebook and Instagram announced a ban on all posts promoting conversion therapy.
Instagram once again rolled out a slew of new features this week. This time they’ve swapped out its ‘Activity’ tab for ‘Shop’ in new global test. Additionally, they rolled out a pinned comment feature as a moderation tool to combat harassment.
On the YouTube front, we saw Ninja start live streaming on the platform for the first time since Microsoft shut down Mixer. YouTube also rolled out a new metric that will finally let creators know exactly how they’re making money on the platform.
Lastly, it appears the “ad-pocalypse” lasted a week, as CPM/RPMs have begun to normalize. Be sure to follow r/SocialMediaNews to stay up-to-date!
