Nominate razmig for a social media award in the Shorty Awards

So I was thinking about making a best of 2011 post, but then I realized how unoriginal that would be, so instead I’ve decided to post a few things that I enjoyed this year.

I obviously didn’t listen to every album that was released this year, but out of the few I did enjoy I’d say the following stood out: Bon Iver – Self Titled, Slow Runner – Damage Points, and Naive Thieves – Le Sheik Rhat EP. Though the record I’ve listened to the most would be The Color Spectrum by The Dear Hunter. This 32 song release covers every mood and feeling I’ve ever felt, from happy (Yellow), to mellow (Blue), to completely pissed off (Black).

I watched a lot of TV this year, between Jon Benjamin Has a Van, Portlandia, and the countless reality shows (Pawn Stars, Tanked, etc), I have to say NBC’s Community has continued the path of becoming a great show. Though there are rumors afloat that NBC may pull the plug but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I’ve been a bit out of it this year as far as videogames go as I’ve been playing a lot of older titles. Though I’ve genuinely enjoyed several releases this year including Mario Kart 7 (3DS), Mortal Kombat (PS3), and Pushmo (3DS). Also with the release of Super Mario Land 3D, a long with all of the ambassador titles, the 3DS went from being my most regrettable purchase of 2011, to being my favorite purchase of 2011.

Drive caught me by surprise as being one of my favorite films of 2011. The soundtrack, the style, the general bad-assery, I enjoyed a lot about this flick. I also enjoyed 50/50, The Muppet Movie, Thor, and of course Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

So that about sums up my list of things I liked in 2011, I covered music, tv, videogames, and movies. Though I can’t end this post without mentioning that for me, 2011 was the year of Chocolate Chip Cookies, Big Gulps, and of course Slim Jims.

Miss ya big guy. So I say let’s snap into 2012!

Pushmo is a superbly original puzzle game developed by Intelligent Systems, released on December 8^th to the Nintendo eShop. You play as Mallo, a chubby little dude-thing who is on a quest to save children that have been trapped inside Pushmos.

A Pushmo is a basically a stack of colorful blocks you push, pull, and climb so you can save a child who is trapped on top of the puzzle. Seems pretty simple right? So why haven’t I played anything like this before? Maybe I’m just out of the loop with puzzle games, I mean last one I was really crazy about was Puzzle League for GBA, or more recently Polarium on the DS…but neither compare to Pushmo.

The mixture of bright vibrant colors, cheerful music, and challenging puzzles make this game totally worth it for me. Not to mention how much replay value there is given you can build your own Pushmos and share them on the web by generating QR codes. People are posting their codes on a Pushmo sub-reddit as we speak and I suspect there will be an endless supply of puzzles popping up after the holiday season.

I also want to note how cool the shifting of blocks look in 3D…this is 3D done right.
I highly recommend this game to anyone and everyone, and believe you’re guaranteed to become addicted….like on an addictive scale of 1 to Alec Baldwin? I’d give this game an Alec Baldwin.

They’re unemployed? #OccupyaDesk. They aren’t earning enough? #StopWhining. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Well, according to Wikipedia: “The protests are against social and economic inequality, high unemployment, greed, as well as corruption, and the undue influence of corporations—particularly from the financial services sector—on government.”

So what’s the problem? Why aren’t people following this? Well, from someone on the outside looking in, let’s take a look specifically at the Occupy Boston Twitter feed. Now bear with me, as the point of this is to scroll/skim through the feed to understand their message. I’m starting at October 31st and scrolling upwards at one full space bar at a time.

Summary of results: [October 31st] Cops left hours ago, marches, meeting, cops are macing, journalist jailed, food/ice cream donation, impromptu march, 3 occupiers arrested, livestream link, post about unemployment, group stands with OB, super committee, musician performing, occupying harvard, livestream link, link to flyer regarding march, marching at Harvard Yard, facilitation training at Harvard, Noel Ignatiev speaking, victory in Portland, march in solidarity, raid in Phoenix, [November 15th] march in Solidarity, link to picture about being heard, pepper spray  in Seattle, temporary restraining order, temporary injunction against eviction, 5 arrests, marching on atlantic ave, food supplies are low, bring pizza, link to blogpost, clean camp, Bloombergs house surrounded, “get up stand up” tweet, donation request, general assembly, UC Davis chancellor, general assembly, six veterans arrested in Charleston, group supports OB, [November 26th] Ted Leo performs, livestream link, general assembly, livestream link, wooden pallet stolen by BPD, [November 29th finally, a useful post] a tweet about a “must read” article…

honestly, I’d continue but already a month worth of tweets and unless I click a link, none of these tweets explain why I should give a damn. Nothing eye catching at least. Stuff about a sink. Stuff about how they’re not going anywhere. Scrolling up to more recent tweets and it seems the Occupy Movement is more focused on battling police more than anything. All I’ve gathered is they’re have a general assembly, they are marching, there is a musician playing, and they like pizza.

Cool. Cool Cool Cool.

You think with all the creative types who are unemployed (like myself) and hanging at these camps, they’d be smart enough to think of a better way to get their messages across rather than “marching into the streets blocking traffic” as one redditor exclaims. By the general attitude of people on a website that sees so much traffic, it seems Occupiers are making more enemies than supporters…and I find this so very disappointing. I mean, this is a movement I want to see succeed.

So what am I getting at? Well, Occupiers…you’ve got a tent for everything right? So where the hell is your social media, marketing, and advertising tent? How did a bunch of women posting about the color of their bras spread like a wildfire, while a movement so important is constantly disregarded and swept under the rug?

All I’m saying is, everyone has a blog [including little old me], and no one wants to read this shit. I barely get any traffic here. I know you guys have a whole slew of problems you’re fighting for…But we’ve got short attention spans, when was the last time anyone talked about Bradley Manning or Julian Assange? if the Occupy Movement can’t trend their purpose in 140 characters or less, they should seriously consider taking a step back and figuring out how this internet thing works…after all you can reach the entire world…but it seems like the masses would rather read Rage Comics than hear about what you’re fighting for.

So let’s figure out how to change their attitudes. I mean come on Occupiers, you’ve dominated a public park, why not try to dominate a series of tubes with some awesome ad campaigns, infographics, and viral videos. I know these exist, but try to create something consistent…because having 6392 different hash-tags isn’t working.

So jobs and walking…how boring. Time to get back to my roots. Gaming. Before I get into it, Smoke the Wii was recently featured in a the top 10 videogame tribute raps list on the kartel. Ah the glory days. OKAY, enough nostalgia. I picked up Mario Kart 7 last Sunday and I haven’t put it down for a moment. So far I’ve played Star Fox 64 3D,Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Mario Land 3D, and I’ve been mostly underwhelmed. I was actually beginning to regret my purchase of the 3DS, until now. I’ve clocked in more than 21 hours of play and I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon. The unlockables alone give this game so much replay value and I haven’t even begun to go at the multiplayer that hard. Well, maybe a little.

So if you’re looking for a game to pick up this holiday season and can’t decide between Super Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7? Well…I’m going to disagree with IGN and say MK7 has my vote.

I’m off to San Francisco tomorrow and am looking forward to it. That’s all folks.

I’m still trying to get used to this thing, but I’ve been reading the manual and definitely getting better with it. On Monday I took my written license test at the DMV and passed. I honestly felt like I was taking the SAT. I had to go back and reread questions a few times since everything was worded in such a weird way. This was also my first test in a long time, I forgot how much I dislike them. I’d take a presentation over an exam any day. I’m a visual dude.

So I want to keep this brief so here is a quick run down of my visit to Los Angeles. On Monday I saw the Naïve Thieves perform at the Silverlake Lounge a long with some other bands. The show was hosted by DC Pierson (of Derrick Comedy). We bumped into him at the door and didn’t even recognize him, not until he hit the stage…and said his name. It was awesome, there was a comedic music act, Charlene Yi was performing but I missed her set. Overall, good music, good laughs, and good times.

On Tuesday and Wednesday I did some touristy stuff except this time I’m a resident, so I actually tried to learn the city. Weird how you can go somewhere on vacation a bunch but still have no understanding of where you are. Totally eye opening. Some photos of these travels are posted on my tumblr and flickr. I finally got a response for a job, which definitely boosted my job hunting spirits. I’m back home now and am planning on continuing the job search and hopefully getting some writing done.
